A student of Malleshwaram University College was advised by the principal who insisted on being allowed to write the exam wearing a burqa, after which she agreed to remove it and appeared for the exam on Thursday.

Board exams for 12th grade students have started in the country.

The student insisted until the last minute that she should be allowed to write the exam wearing a hijab. Although the authorities rejected his pleas, the student persisted. However, the director who was on exam duty talked to the student and explained the rules.

He also told her how important it was to write the exam, after which she agreed to drop the exam, sources in the education ministry said.

Education Minister BC Nagesh has repeatedly said that students wearing hijab or any clothing that represents religion will not be allowed to write the exam.
