Rajeev Chandrashekhar announced the Digital India Act
Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar presented the objectives of the Digital India Act at the Digital India Dialogues in Bengaluru on March 9. He highlighted challenges such as internet crime, cyber security, hate speech and fake news that the old laws failed to address. A core team at the Ministry of IT is working to review all relevant global laws before drafting and conducting consultations.
University of Melbourne opens dual degree with 3 Indian universities
The University of Melbourne is to launch a Bachelor of Science (dual degree) with the University of Madras, Savitribai Phule University of Pune and Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management, Hyderabad to strengthen educational links between Australia and India. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently announced the end of the Australia-India Recognition Mechanism for Educational Qualifications. He also announced the Maitri Scholarship, part of a wider program to strengthen ties between the two countries.
Ram Chandra Paudel, who lost the post of Prime Minister 17 times, became the President of Nepal in the first attempt
Senior Nepali Congress Party leader Ram Chandra Paudel has been elected as the third President of Nepal. In Thursday’s presidential election, he secured 33,802 votes, more than twice that of his rival, Subash Chandra Nembang. Paudel was supported by the ruling 8-party alliance. Paudel, who entered politics at the age of 16, is the oldest leader to become the president of Nepal.
Cattle smuggling: Delhi court extends TMC leader Anubrata Mandal’s ED detention
A Delhi court has extended the remand of Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mandal by 11 days in a money laundering case related to the West Bengal cattle smuggling case. The ED sought the extension saying that he has to face the other accused and evidence in the case is needed to unravel the larger conspiracy. The CBI had earlier arrested Mandal in a corruption case.
Xi Jinping was elected to a historic third term as president
Chinese President Xi Jinping has secured a third term as head of state, making him the longest-serving head of state, amid deteriorating relations with the United States and tensions with Taiwan. Xi has vowed to make China a great power and is pessimistic about Sino-US relations. Xi dominates all aspects of the party leadership and aims to restore ties that have been plagued by geopolitical tensions, given China’s influence over its immediate neighbors, including India and Japan. Faced with economic difficulties, he aims to strengthen ties with China by visiting Moscow and European countries.
