Meghalaya Chief Minister Konrad Sangma has written to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan seeking exemption from the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for students of the northeastern state seeking admission in various universities for the current academic session.
In the letter, Sangma said the recent assembly elections had led to delays in the state board exam, which would cause “unprecedented challenges” for students to clear the CUET exams.
He also said that the state government has taken steps to establish a state university for which the administration will soon get the approval of the Meghalaya Governor.
“In view of the above and since most of the colleges in the state are affiliated to North East Hill University, I request you to exempt the state of Meghalaya from conducting CUET,” Sangma said in his March 10 letter. .
Last year, the Central Government had exempted Meghalaya students from CUET on the request of the Chief Minister.
Recently, the Meghalaya Board of School Education issued a circular stating that students appearing for the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination 2023 must appear for CUET if they intend to take admission in central universities for undergraduate studies.
He also added that HSSLC students from Meghalaya who wish to pursue further studies in universities and colleges across the country should appear for CUET, which is mandatory to secure admission to undergraduate courses.
