Malala Yousafzai has shared her response after Jimmy Kimmel sparked backlash when he asked her an awkward question at the 2023 Academy Awards.
The 25-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate made her Oscar debut on Sunday, March 12. The educationist attended the 95th Academy Awards as executive producer of his short film Stranger at the Gate.
Yousafzai looked very uncomfortable when the host of the Oscars approached her with a question during the break.
Kimmel asked her about the “spit gate” between Chris Pine and Harry Styles, to which she replied, “I’m just talking about peace.”
Hours after the ceremony, Yousafzai took to Twitter to share a video of the shocking exchange at the Oscars. “Treat people with kindness,” he tweeted.
Kimmel’s awkward question sparked online backlash as many viewers took to Twitter to defend Yousafzai: “Watching the #Oscars from home, I was horrified by the relationship between @jimmykimmel and @Malala Jimmy, you were incredibly disrespectful.”
Twitter users praised Yousafzai for her “classy” response to the “disgusting and horrible” joke, while others were unimpressed for asking her the question.
