One of India’s premier institutes of technology, Bombay, has witnessed a significant increase in patent success rates, according to a report by the director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. A report accessed by The Indian Express said that in 2021-22, the institute issued 131 patents, of which 96 were issued in 2016-17, up from only 27 of 116, a significant increase from six years ago. The Institute also saw an increase in overall Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) applications, including patents, trademarks, designs and copyright.

The report states that the institute has maintained a steady increase in the success rate of IPR applications, and the number of granted patents has witnessed an upward trend in recent years. In 2020-21, the institute issued 164 patents, of which 120 were granted. Although the number of patents granted dropped to 131 in 2021-22, the institute maintained a success rate of over 73 percent.

The report attributed the increase to targeted efforts to assess intellectual property potential in the work of MTech/Dual Diploma students and active pursuit of technologies protected/proposed for protection by the institute. In addition, the report noted an increase in the number of IPR applications related to “filing of IPR applications for technologies related to COVID-19” during 2020-21.

In 2021-22, IIT Bombay filed 189 applications for IPRs, including patent, trademark, design and copyright, of which just over 87 percent or 165 were granted, a significant increase from the previous number of less than 60 per person. . cent. In 2019-2020, 153 applications for intellectual property rights were filed, of which approximately 56 percent or 86 were granted. In the following year 2020-21, the total number of IPR applications has increased significantly, with 264 applications filed. However, the success rate of these applications was approximately 55 percent, of which only 145 were granted.

This increase shows that the institute has implemented a better R&D policy as shown in the director’s annual report for the last three years.

“The increase in trademark registrations can be seen as an indication of the licensing opportunities for various innovative technologies at IIT Bombay,” says the director’s report for 2021.
