Sharing information in the House, the government said steps are being taken to provide proper education to students studying in government schools.

54 government primary schools in two districts of Gujarat are staffed with only one teacher each, while more than 900 teaching posts are lying vacant in these districts, the state assembly was informed on Wednesday.

Sharing information in the House, the government said steps are being taken to provide proper education to students studying in government schools.

Responding to a query by Aam Aadmi Party MP Hemant Ahir about the shortage of teachers in Jamnagar and Devbhumi Dwarka districts, Education Minister Kuber Dindor said that 54 government primary schools in these districts are functioning with only one teacher in each institution.

Of these 54 schools, 46 are in Devbhumi Dwarka district and eight in neighboring Jamnagar, Dindor said.

He said there are vacancies due to the transfer or retirement of teachers from these districts.

A total of 905 teacher posts are currently vacant in government, grant and non-grant primary schools of Jamnagar (330 posts) and Devbhumi Dwarka (575), the minister said.

According to Dindor, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is taking various steps to ensure that no student is deprived of education due to shortage of teachers.

He informed the House that the process of recruiting teachers for public schools is currently underway.

A permanent teacher will be assigned to the division, the state government will provide education to students by sending “pravasi” (visiting) teachers to the deficient schools, Dindor said.

While 102 visiting teachers have been appointed in Jamnagar, 256 such appointments in Devbhumi Dwarka have been made as an interim measure to ensure that students are not affected, the minister said.

Responding to a related question raised by Congress MP Shailesh Parmar, Dindor informed the Assembly that 2,082 teacher posts are vacant in government primary schools in Ahmedabad (1,708 vacancies) and Gandhinagar (374) districts.

The two districts include Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s commercial hub, and Gandhinagar, the state capital.
