DGP Singh on Tuesday announced on Twitter that 22 people have been arrested from Guwahati, North Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sadia, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.
Several students from different parts of Assam were brought to the CID headquarters on Wednesday for questioning in connection with the investigation into the question paper leak of Class 10 state examination, an officer said. Three people have been arrested in this case, he said.
“We have detained students, teachers and others in Assam. They have been brought to Guwahati for further questioning,” said a CID officer.
However, he refused to share any other details.
Director General of Police (DGP) G.P. Singh reached Dibrugarh on Wednesday morning, from where around six students have been detained so far.
Speaking to reporters outside the assembly here, Education Minister Ranoy Pegu said the CID is investigating the paper leak.
“So far, some students and others have been detained or arrested. But we have to be patient and wait for the completion of the CID investigation to know where the paper leak came from,” Pegu said.
The opposition Congress staged a demonstration at the assembly gate before the start of the day’s proceedings, demanding clarification on whether or not the question paper was circulated.
“The government has told us that the examination has been stopped because there are some materials on WhatsApp in the chamber. They should explain what actually happened,” said opposition leader Debabrata Saikia.
The Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) General Science Examination for Class 10 was canceled on Sunday evening following reports of a question paper leak.
According to the SEBA notification, the canceled General Science exam will now be held on March 30.
The Assam Police registered a case on Monday and handed over the investigation to the CID.
DGP Singh on Tuesday announced on Twitter that 22 people have been arrested from Guwahati, North Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sadia, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.
Assam Police spokesperson Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan later told PTI that three of those held for questioning have been arrested in connection with the paper leak.
“They are all from Kahilipara Government School for the Deaf and Dumb in Guwahati. There were 42 packets of question papers for the school but one was missing. “This is a strong basis for their arrest,” he said. The Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) of Assam said the school principal, a teacher and an ordinary employee Bhuyan were among those arrested.
