The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved a new medical college in Assam with 100 MBBS seats. On Monday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to pay a nod to Nalabari Medical College becoming the 12th medical college in the state to receive the approval of NCM, India’s apex regulatory body for medical education.
“Nalbari Medical College has been recognized by the National Medical Commission to admit 100 MBBS students. This is a historic achievement for Assam with the opening of 4 new medical colleges in one year,” wrote CM Sarma. The new medical college will start admissions for MBBS course from the academic session 2023-24.

The recognition of Nalbari Medical College came after NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) examined an analyst’s report on February 27 this year to assess the availability of infrastructural facilities of the college, libraries, hostels, hospital, laboratories. College faculty, their experience, publications and residents or tutors, nursing and paramedical staff to start MBBS course.
“In view of the approval of the above 100 MBBS seats, the Commission has decided to obtain the undertaking or essential documents for issuance of letter of authorization to start or increase the seats for the academic year 2023-24,” the NBC said in a statement.
According to the norms of the commission, the college has to provide and obtain permission for all the infrastructure in terms of teaching and non-teaching staff, equipment, building and material facilities of the hospital. Further, no student should be admitted to the above courses until the official approval of MARB is completed, the notification said.
Meanwhile, Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta announced that the total number of MBBS seats in the state will increase to 1,500 after the final approval. In addition, the Assam government has set a target to increase the number of medical colleges in the state to 24 by 2026, according to the Health Minister. In February, the commission approved 100 MBBS seats at Nagaon Medical College in Assam.
