During an examination of their documents, the Canadian authorities discovered that the “acceptance letters” sent to the educational institutions were fake, and the Canada Border Security Agency issued them deportation letters.

Jalandhar police on Thursday said they found the office of a travel agent who allegedly issued fake documents to more than 700 Indian students who were to be deported from Canada.

Police said the office is located near the city’s bus depot, but it has been closed for six months.

They said they are investigating other details but have not yet received any complaint in this regard.

According to some media reports, more than 700 Indian students may be deported from Canada for presenting false documents issued by a travel agent in Jalandhar.

The students went to Canada on study visas in 2018-19, but the fraud came to light after they recently applied for permanent residence (PR) in the North American country.

During an examination of their documents, Canadian authorities discovered that the “acceptance letters” sent to the educational institutions were fake, and the Canada Border Security Agency issued them deportation letters.

Reports said the travel agent charged each student more than Rs 16 lakh for his services.

“We have not yet received a complaint in this regard. However, we are still investigating,” Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Vatsala Gupta told reporters.

According to him, the travel agent’s office has remained closed for the past six months. “We are still investigating and we will take action whenever we receive any complaint,” he added. It is worth noting that many students from Punjab aspire to go to Canada for higher education and live there.
