Night owls (or extra early birds) now pay less to ride Amtrak.
On Thursday, the company announced that train fares on Northeast routes between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. will increase from $5 to $20.
Low-cost destinations include New York, Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and more. serves stations on the North-East Corridor. For example, an overnight train from New York to Newark, New Jersey costs less than $5.
The discounts are aimed at “travelers returning from concerts, plays, sporting events, or those wishing to leave later or earlier,” the company wrote in Thursday’s announcement.
The new overnight rate may ease some of the cost pressure on travelers who continue to spend even as inflation squeezes their wallets. For example, flight bookings have been strong as consumers have gifted travel since the pandemic hit.
Amtrak’s Northeast route in particular has become more expensive to ride in the past year, sometimes even more than airfare, because the corridor is popular with commuters and connects major cities in the region.
