Ryan Reynolds may be best known for playing the genius Deadpool, but the actor is also developing a reputation as a savvy investor. After taking stakes in businesses such as Aviator Gin and Mint Mobile, the Canadian’s deal-making fortune could far exceed his film industry success.
Reynolds could earn more than $300 million from his stake in Mint Mobile. was sold to telecommunications giant T-Mobile to $1.35 billion on Wednesday. Reynolds bought a stake in Mint Mobile in 2019 and joked at the time that he would pay $15 a month for the company’s basic wireless plan.
According to Fortune magazine, his stake in Mint Mobile is about 25% of the company. Based on the sale price, that would value Reynolds’ stake at about $340 million. Mint Mobile said it could not comment on the sale beyond what has been made public, and T-Mobile did not immediately return a request for comment.
Reynolds said in a CNBC interview on Wednesday that he had bought “a very large part of the company,” though he did not specify the size of the investment.
Reynolds earned an estimated $70 million in 2020, largely based on his film and entertainment success, according to Forbes. According to the publication, the actor earns about $20 million per film — which is good for most people, but not enough to put him on Forbes magazine’s list of the highest-paid entertainers in 2022. (Top earners: members of rock band Genesis, with earnings of $230 million last year.)
But the Deadpool actor has stepped away from movies in recent years and invested in Aviation Gin, which gained attention in 2019. viral advertising it mocked the Peloton ad.
Aviation Gin was sold to giant Diageo Up to $610 million in 2020, Diageo Reynolds said it would retain a “continuing ownership interest”. Diageo’s US shares are up about 25% since the deal was announced.
“Mint Aviation wasn’t an obvious step after Gin. Low-cost wireless isn’t great. However, Mint Mobile has grown exponentially in 3+ years,” Reynolds tweeted Wednesday after the T-Mobile deal was announced.
Reynolds is also part of Welsh football team Wrexham AFC, which he bought with actor Rob McElhenny in 2021 for an estimated $2.5 million. Additionally, Reynolds owns content company Maximum Effort, which describes itself as creating “films, television series, content, commercials and cocktails for the personal entertainment of Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds.”
