The PCB’s move has sparked speculation that the star batsman may lose the captaincy in one format and that the board is eyeing players for leadership roles.

Shaheen Shah Afridi was earlier tipped to lead the side, but following his cryptic tweets, the board appointed Shadab Khan as the skipper for the Afghanistan series to be played in Sharjah.

When asked about the challenges of the UAE tour, Shadab said that the Afghan side was a good T20 team and expected a good series against them.

“We have to play smart cricket without fear,” Shadab said.

Shadab will lead a relatively young team as many PSL performers have also been included in the team.

Apart from the series, PCB appointed Muhammad Yousuf as interim manager and coach for the short Sharjah tour to “ensure continuity”.

Yusuf has been working as a coach for the national team since last year and also works at the National High Performance Center.
