Fairleigh Dickinson upset top-seeded Purdue to become just the second 16th seed to defeat a No. 1 in March Madness history.

There’s something about playing Cinderella in New Jersey schools.

Last year it was St. Peter’s.

On Thursday, it was Princeton.

Now it’s Grant Singleton and Fairlie Dickinson.

FDU became just the second No. 16 seed in NCAA Tournament history to upset a No. 1 seed, beating Purdue 63-58.

Neither team managed more than six points the entire game, and while Zach Edey continued to have a walk-off double-double, the Knights never wavered.

After Purdue took a 47-41 lead, FDU went on a 13-3 run to go up by four points. Purdue cut it to within 3 points, but neither team scored in the next four minutes.

FDU had a five-point lead with less than two minutes to go and its defense continued to come up short. The Boilermakers went scoreless for nearly six minutes before cutting the 3-point deficit in half.

But Sean Moore drilled a 3 from the top of the perimeter to put FDU up 61-56 with 1:04 left. Purdue responded with a pair of free throws, then forced a turnover to take possession as the shot clock wound down to three.

After Purdue’s first shot was blocked out of bounds, Fletcher Loyer missed a 3 that the Knights fouled back with 8.1 seconds left. Demetre Roberts made both free throws to bring his team back to within five, which turned out to be a dagger.
