ED raids in Hooghly district

The ED officials, divided into at least six teams, raided properties belonging to Shantunu Banerjee in Balagarh, Bandel, Chinsurah and Hooghly districts of West Bengal.

The ED on Saturday conducted raids at various locations in neighboring Hooghly district, looking for properties belonging to Shantanu Banerjee, the now-expelled TMC chief arrested as part of the West Bengal school work scam cash probe. the agency reported.

Starting Saturday morning, ED officials in at least six teams raided properties allegedly belonging to Shantunu Banerjee in Balagarh, Bandel, Chinsurah and other areas of West Bengal’s Hooghly district, he said.

“Now nothing much has been found among the properties belonging to Shantanu. Two flats in Bandel and Chinsura had to be unlocked. The lock of the main door of the hotel registered in the name of the accused was also broken,” the official said when contacted.

The ED could not find anything significant to help take the investigation to the next level, he added.

“The search is still ongoing and may take several more hours to complete,” he said.

Banerjee is in the custody of the Central Investigation Agency. He is E.D. Soon after his arrest, he was expelled from the ruling Trinamool Congress.

The investigating agency is probing the scam and has arrested several people for alleged involvement in irregularities in teaching and non-teaching recruitment in government and aided schools.
